Rules

Crazy Eights is a shedding game: the goal is to get rid of all your cards first. Here you play one against one with a standard 52-card deck. Each player gets 7 cards, the rest form the stock, and the top card of the stock is turned up to start the discard pile (an 8 is put back and another card turned).

Players take turns. The first round you go first; after that the start alternates.

  • Play one card on the discard pile that matches the top card's suit or rank: a 6 of hearts goes on any heart or on any 6.
  • An 8 can be played on anything. Whoever plays it names the suit to follow, and the next card must be of that suit (or another 8).
  • If you have no card that fits, draw from the stock one card at a time until you can play. If the stock is empty and you can't play, pass.
  • The first player to play their last card wins the round and scores the cards left in the other hand: each 8 is 50, kings, queens and jacks 10, aces 1, and the other cards their number.
  • If the stock is empty and neither player can play, the round is blocked: the player with the lower hand scores the difference.
  • The first player to reach 100 points at the end of a round wins the game.

How to play here

Tap a card to play it: the cards that fit stand up, the others are dimmed. To play an 8, tap it and then the suit you want. When nothing fits, tap the stock or Draw a card; when the stock is empty, tap Pass.

The computer's cards stay face down until the round ends; you see how many it holds. Pick how strong it plays: easy plays any card that fits, normal keeps its 8s and plays like a careful person, hard also thinks ahead through many possible deals. It never sees your cards or the order of the stock.

Your game is saved as you play. Daily gives everyone the same cards today.

Tips

Crazy Eights rewards keeping your options open and watching what the other player can't do.

  • Keep your 8s for when nothing else fits, or to go out: an 8 played early is a 50-point card wasted.
  • Play from your longest suit, so you can follow it again next turn.
  • Get rid of high cards (kings, queens, jacks) early: if the other player goes out, they count against you.
  • Watch the suits your opponent had to draw on: they had none of that suit then. Switching to it with a matching rank or an 8 can make them draw again.
  • When your opponent is down to one or two cards, change the suit rather than following the one they want.

Questions

Does the computer see my cards?

No. It decides from its own cards, the discard pile, how many cards you hold and the suits you had to draw on. Hard play imagines where the unseen cards could be; it never looks at your hand or the stock.

Can I draw a card when I could play one?

Not here: you draw only when no card in your hand fits. Some tables allow drawing anyway; this one keeps the game moving.

Why is an 8 left in my hand worth 50 points?

Because it is the most useful card in the game: it fits on anything and lets you choose the suit. Holding one to the end of a round is the risk you take for that power, so play it before the other player can go out.

Is Cards & Puzzles free?

Yes. Cards & Puzzles is free to use and needs no account.
