Rules

Euchre is played by four players in two teams with a 24-card deck: the 9, 10, jack, queen, king and ace of each suit. You sit South with North as your partner; West and East play against you. Here all three are computer players. Each player gets five cards and the next card is turned face up; the other three stay face down. The deal moves one seat clockwise each round.

Trumps rank in an unusual order: the jack of the trump suit (the right bower) is highest, then the other jack of the same colour (the left bower, which counts as a trump, not as its printed suit), then the ace, king, queen, 10 and 9 of trump. In the other suits, aces are high.

  • First round of bidding, starting left of the dealer: order up the turned card, making its suit trump (the dealer takes the card and puts one card away), or pass.
  • If all four pass, second round: name another suit as trump, or pass. If it comes back to the dealer, the dealer must name a suit ("stick the dealer").
  • The team that chose trump are the makers. The player left of the dealer leads the first trick. Follow the suit led if you can; otherwise play any card. The highest trump wins, else the highest card of the suit led.
  • Makers who take 3 or 4 of the 5 tricks score 1 point; all 5 (a march) score 2. If the makers take fewer than 3 they are euchred, and the other team scores 2.
  • The first team to reach 10 points wins.

How to play here

When it is your turn to bid, use the buttons: Order up (or Pick it up when you deal) or Pass, then in the second round a suit or Pass. If you deal and picked the card up, tap a card to put away. Then tap a card to play it: the cards you may play stand up, the others are dimmed, and a tap on a dimmed card tells you why. Your hand keeps the trumps together on the right, bowers last.

This version has no going alone: every round is played by all four. Pick how strong the computer players are; your partner plays at the same level. Easy calls on a hunch and plays any legal card, normal judges each hand and plays like a careful partner, hard also thinks ahead through many possible deals. They never see your cards or each other's. Your game is saved as you play, and Daily gives everyone the same cards today.

Tips

Euchre is short and sharp: five tricks, and calling trump well matters most.

  • Count your trumps with both bowers in mind: a jack of the same colour turns into the second-highest card in the deck.
  • Three sure trumps, or two with an off-suit ace, is usually enough to call. Ordering up to your partner's deal gives your team an extra trump.
  • Think twice before ordering up to an opponent who deals: you hand them a trump.
  • When your team made trump, lead trump to pull the others' trumps. When the other team did, lead your aces instead.
  • Don't trump your partner's winning ace: let it hold and keep your trump for later.

Questions

Do the computer players see my cards?

No. Each computer player decides from its own cards, the turned card, the calls and the cards played. Hard players count the cards and imagine where the rest could be; they never see another hand or the cards left face down.

Why did my jack of diamonds count as a heart?

With hearts as trump, the jack of diamonds is the left bower: it becomes the second-highest heart. You play it when hearts are led, and you can't use it to follow a diamond lead.

Can I go alone?

Not in this version. Going alone (playing without your partner for 4 points) is a common rule; in this version every round is played by all four players.

Is Cards & Puzzles free?
