Rules
FreeCell uses one 52-card deck, all dealt face up into eight columns: four of seven cards and four of six. Above them are four free cells and four foundations.
The goal is to move every card to the foundations, one per suit, from Ace up to King.
- Build columns down in alternating colors: a red 9 on a black 10.
- A free cell holds one card. Any card can go into an empty free cell.
- Any card or run can go into an empty column.
- Cards move one at a time. A run moves together when there is room to move it card by card: with c empty free cells and e empty columns, up to (c + 1) × 2^e cards (an empty column you move into doesn't count).
- Cards on the foundations stay there.
How to play here
Drag a card or a run, or tap it: a tap sends it to the foundation if it can go there, else onto a column, else to a free cell.
Cards that no other card can still need go to the foundations on their own: Aces and Twos at once, other cards when both suits of the other color are high enough.
Undo takes back as many moves as you like, including those automatic moves. Hint shows a move from a winning line our solver found. Finish plays the rest when the way home is clear.
Tips
Because nothing is hidden, almost every FreeCell deal can be won with careful play. Losing usually means the free cells filled up too early.
- Look for the Aces and Twos first and plan how to free them.
- Keep free cells empty as long as you can; each one doubles as room to move runs.
- Spend free cells before you spend an empty column. A free column counts double when you move a run, a cell only adds one card.
- Before using the last free cell, check you can empty one again soon.
Questions
Is every FreeCell deal winnable?
Almost every shuffle can be won with one deck and four free cells. Every deal on this site can: our solver won each one before it was added.
Why does a run sometimes not move?
A run moves only when there is room to move it card by card. With 2 empty free cells and no empty column you can move 3 cards; with 1 empty column too, 6. The message under the board tells you how many fit.
Are some deals easier than others?
Yes. We grade every deal by how hard it is to finish: card deals by how often a simple, casual way of playing wins them, Minesweeper boards by how many tricky steps they need. New players start with easy deals; two wins in a row bring harder ones, two unfinished deals easier ones. You can also pick a level yourself under Settings.
Is Cards & Puzzles free?
Yes. Cards & Puzzles is free to use and needs no account.
